And even though our presence was established in Southern Africa as long ago as 1883, the full scope of The Army’s influence and work may not be widely known. This December edition is a big milestone for us as we celebrate our 200th issue of JOY! Magazine, and 20 years of publishing the Gospel. Over the past 20 years, we’ve compiled and printed 200 faith-filled editions! Our office wall is covered with the covers of every issue we’ve ever printed, and it feels like just yesterday we were putting together that very first edition of the new JOY! Magazine. As Christmas decorations start filling our homes and festive tunes echo through the malls, there’s no mistaking the season. At our JOY! office, we have an annual tradition of putting up decorations as soon as we start working on our beautiful Christmas issues (in October). Every year, our office becomes a spectacularly decorated space. But amid all this festivity, I find myself pausing to reflect on the true significance of Christmas – a time to remember the ultimate gift that defines the season: the birth of Jesus. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.” God’s love and mercy The significance of Christmas is that Jesus Christ came to this earth because God is rich in mercy and loved us so much. Jesus came to give us eternal life and to restore our relationship with God. A message for everyone There are two groups of people reading this article. The first group are those…
When you think of Santa Claus, it’s easy to picture a jolly, white-bearded man in a red suit bringing gifts to children. However, the roots of this fantastical figure trace back to Saint Nicholas, a 4th-century Christian bishop from Myra, a town in modern-day Turkey. Unlike today’s commercialised image, Saint Nicholas was revered for his deep faith and generosity, inspiring a legacy that still endures. A life of compassion and charity Nicholas was born into a wealthy Christian family, but his parents died when he was young, leaving him a large inheritance. Rather than keep this wealth, Nicholas chose to follow Jesus’ example of selflessness and charity. He used his fortune to help those in need, often doing so secretly. One famous story recounts how he provided dowries for three…
