Ask any explorer what led them down their path of adventure and discovery and you will likely find that there was a singular moment in their childhood when a spark was lit. Perhaps they bore witness to an extraordinary human achievement, such as the first lunar landing, which inspired so many of us to go into engineering, astronomy, and space exploration; or they delighted being in the great outdoors—collecting insects in the woods or shells along the seashore—which led them to pursue a career in conservation or the environmental sciences. At our core, we believe supporting the next generation of explorers is integral to our mission, which is why, in the spring of 2016, we launched our Explorers Cubs program aimed at children between the ages of five and 10.…

Johanson, then a freshly minted paleontologist, unearthed the fossilized remains of a 3.2-million-year-old hominin of the species Australopithecus afarensis at a locality known as Hadar in Ethiopia’s Afar region. Designated AL 288-1 by Johanson and his team, the world would come to know this ancient female human ancestor as “Lucy.” That discovery would revolutionize the field of paleoanthropology and radically alter our notions of human evolution, as Lucy and her kind had clearly adopted bipedal locomotion before more advanced brain development, which had previously been presumed to have been a prerequisite. JC: Did you reach your research objectives? JI: We achieved them all: high apogee, EVA, Starlink communication, and about 40 science and research experiments where we at least gathered a single data point. We were also testing early versions of a new-generation EVA suit designed for affordability and scalable production. If SpaceX reaches Mars, there will be a need for thousands of EVA suits. I’m confident that the ones we have developed and tested will be used on the Red Planet. JC: When you were exposed to the vacuum of space 740 kilometers up in the new suit, were you at all apprehensive?
