Mind maps (or spider diagrams) are great for turning jumbled thoughts into a clear picture. MindNode has robust layout features but, more importantly, speeds things along: you start with a bullet-point outline and then, with a single tap, ‘explode’ it into a full mind map. Alas, it’s iOS only, but MiMind is a suitable option if you’re armed with an Android blower and fancy a spot of mental mapping.

This app’s also based around text and Markdown, but has a different approach from Obsidian. The idea is that Ulysses becomes a repository for all your text: you dump ideas into it, and later make sense of them.
