The Korean Express Train as a Work of Public Infrastructure: The Olympics and Beyond The installation of express train lines in the Gangwon-do region was noticeably accelerated with the announcement of the PyeongChang 2018 Olympic Winter Games. Those who carry out architectural practice in Jeju tend to be obsessed with regionality. If they were born and raised in Jeju, this tendency seems all the more remarkable. The architect Yang Gun, born in Jeju, has for the past two decades worked primarily in Jeju, digging down into the specificities of the region as if it is his fate. There was discussion about traditionality and modernity in the 70s and 80s, with this focus moving on to regionality and diversity in the 1990s and 2000s. The ‘Hidden Display Handle’ of LG Hausys led by Min Kyungjip (principal, LG Hausys) won the iF Design Award 2018 in the Building Technology category. Developed by the LG Hausys R&D Center Future Window Project Team (Choi Jaehun, Lee Taeho, Seo Sanghoon) of LG Hausys Central Research Institute, this award-winning product is a window handle using IoT (Internet of Things) technology. Radical There is one tree. If the tree is withered, its visible branches and leaves will have to be removed for it to be cured. Yet a more radical method could be to fertilise the soil and find the cause from there. The word radical is derived from of roots or from roots, originated from the Latin ‘radicalis’. The cure from roots, not from the withered leaves, makes the weakened tree radically healthy. The approach to daily life is not that different. The starting point of NAMELESS Architecture was a pavilion. The firm attempted a fundamental construction of carefully selected materials drawn from several sources, including non-architectural elements such as air or water. Throughout this process, the distinctive architectural practice of Na Unchung and Yoo Sorae began to gain public attention. Even though the range of their practice expands to a more realistic work that is based on larger-scale, multi-functional, urban, and industrial contexts, a pavilion is still a significant theme in their work, serving as an experimental laboratory of NAMELESS Architecture. An Unfamiliar Challenge Kim Narae (Kim): A consensus seemed to build around the suggestion that the opening and the closing ceremonies of the Olympics should be held at the Gangneung Stadium. However, considering that a new building had been built at Pyeongchang, where the Olympic Games were to be held, a decision was reached that the ceremonies should instead be held at Pyeongchang. Good Access The opening ceremony of PyeongChang 2018 Paralympic Winter Games, held on 9 March, was held under the theme ‘A World of Coexistence’, where people with and without disabilities could come together without discrimination but in mutual recognition of each other’s differences. A torchbearer with a prosthetic left leg climbed a steep slope with the assistance of a rope and passed the flaming torch to a 2-men team composed of a disabled individual and a non-disabled individual. If you walk through the old alleyways of Seochon, you will eventually arrive at Chebu-dong where shabby hanoks stand back to back. These hanoks dress themselves up in red and black brickwork and adorn the alleyways with a vibrant new landscape. The Chebu-dong Community Cultural Center is raising its steeple high between the hanoks and serving as a focal point for the low-lying neighbourhood. The months of February and March were particularly animated this year due to the PeyongChang 2018 Olympic Winter Games. Thirteen stadiums – in which a total of 102 matches of various sports were held, such as an international broadcasting centre, an Olympic stadium for the opening and closing ceremonies, and other additional facilities – were built in Pyeongchang and Gangneung region in Gangwon-do. In the 1988 December issue of SPACE, Jang Seyang noted, ‘it is important that we host the Olympics, and then come to learn from the experience, pinpoint what we did wrong and how to be free from it’. A Clever Solution: Re-locatable Modular Architecture Among the many things to consider when planning a structure, it is not common to have a ‘post-event utilisation method’ as a primary focus. The structures of this PyeongChang 2018 Olympic Winter Games, however, were planned with that as directive. There was a need to recognize that the structures would either be demolished, reutilised for a different purpose, or run with minimal management costs, such that they will not remain as a problem for the Gangwon region after the event. The PyeongChang Media Residence, designed by POSCO A & C, is one of the most revolutionary examples among those structures. This structure is to be demolished and ultimately used elsewhere.
