The premise of The Mangler feels like the punchline of a joke about Stephen King. An evil laundryfolding machine chowing down on virgin fingers? Silly.
But, at least at the beginning, it’s actually kind of creepy. Through Tobe Hooper’s lens, the industrial laundry is a proper dark Satanic mill, all steam, sparks, and churning metal. Bill Gartley (Robert Englund, sporting leg braces and awful facial prosthetics) feels almost like a Dickensian villain, happily feeding his poor workers to the mangle.
Unfortunately, King’s original story was pretty short, so Hooper and his co-writers Stephen Brooks and Harry Alan Towers had to add extra plotlines (and…
