Ahead of Jodie Whittaker’s full debut later this year, four of the Time Lord’s previous female foils are taking centre stage in The Day She Saved The Doctor. Composed of four stories by Susan Calman, Jenny Colgan, Jacqueline Rayner and Dorothy Koomson, it focuses on four companions in Bill, Clara, Rose and Sarah Jane.
“Elisabeth Sladen made Sarah Jane such a compelling character,” says Jacqueline Rayner, who sends Sarah Jane to ancient Rome to investigate why women are going blind. “She had strength and compassion, even when she was scared. And in The Sarah Jane Adventures, she effectively became the Doctor, so if you’re looking for proof that the Doctor can be played by a female actor, just look at Sarah Jane.”
