At my rock bottom, I had lost all my friends, my relationships, my job, and my mind. I was addicted to drugs and alcohol, and resentful of my past, having been adopted four times, losing two moms, and never having a father figure. I felt lonely, isolated, and disconnected from people, and it made me feel like there was nothing out there for me. For my friend Jay Kehoe, owning a skoolie is all about being open to unexpected adventures—hitting the road and heading toward the unknown. But there are certain events that no one wants to leave up to chance when traveling, with mechanical failures and inconvenient pit stops at the top of that list. Midnight approached as I cycled toward tiny Gorda, California. A hot Santa Ana wind blew across my bare arms, rustled grasses, and stirred up dust on the road ahead. On that moonless night, the Pacific Ocean was visible only where it glowed a mysterious, phosphorescent orange. I was biking—not sleeping— because I was about to sneak through a closed landslide. After the locals told me that other cyclists had managed it, I decided to risk a potential fine in order to skip a 200-mile detour on my way to San Diego and, ultimately, Florida. From when I could barely walk, my family from around the country would pilgrimage every summer to our cabin in Northern Minnesota’s Iron Range. We’d make the three-plus-hour drive from Minneapolis to the Queen City of the North, Virginia, where my dad grew up. We always stopped at Tobies in Hinckley on the drive north for the best baked goods. I still dream about their cinnamon rolls and cookies. We sometimes look at those larger RVs—you know, the ones with recliners, four televisions, a wine fridge, and a jacuzzi—and wonder a few things. First, how do you tear yourself away from all that comfort and immerse yourself in the outdoors? Second, how do you drive that thing on dirt roads or beaches? I am writing from sunny Silver City, 415 miles southwest of Taos, New Mexico, and a year of lessons since our #vanlife disaster there. A product of the ’80s, our Dodge B250 van is carburetor-equipped: a detail that was insignificant all the way up to our second day on the road. Grand County, Colorado, is home to fewer than 20,000 year-round residents, but this little pocket of paradise in the north-central Rocky Mountains packs a one-two-three tourism punch.
