THE FIX: To soothe the pain, apply a generous schmear of aloe vera gel to the affected areas before bedtime, says Arielle Nagler, a dermatologist at NYU Langone Medical Center, in New York City. (Lay a towel on the pillow first.) In the morning, wash with lukewarm water and an alcohol-free shampoo (like Burt's Bees Super Shiny Mango Shampoo; $8, burtsbees.com). "Alcohol may make flaking worse," says Nagler. Keep hair spray, gel, dry shampoo, conditioner, and mousse off the area, as they may exacerbate the problem.
