But like Australian-born, Los Angeles-based photographer Luke Austin, you may have noticed a blinding abundance of Caucasian abs and pecs. “White portraits often receive triple the number of likes and comments as a portrait of a black man,” Austin says of his own work he’s posted. “We are brainwashed into thinking that European features are the epitome of beauty.” In response to that lack of diversity, Austin made it a point four years ago to focus his lens on gorgeous black men. IN AN EARLY pivotal passage in Joseph Cassara’s first novel, The House of Impossible Beauties, Angel (or Angie) Xtravaganza—the real-life founding mother of the House of Xtravaganza and an icon of New York City’s ballroom/ vogue scene of the 1980s—discovers that although her lover, Hector, is HIV positive, she herself is not. This seems to be the predominant question of our time, a period of upheaval when we are glimpsing the profound possibilities of a culture in which it’s no longer axiomatic to step aside for straight white men.
