Most well-known hiking trails in South Africa have been mapped. Hikers usually receive a printed map with information about the trail, overnight spots and landmarks along the way. But what about places like the Wolkberg Wilderness Area (p44)? You won’t find a nice, colour-coded map of all the trails available, but that doesn’t mean there’s no map of the area. South Africa has been topographically mapped in its entirety and the public can access the database via the CD:NGI – the Chief Directorate: National Geo-spatial Information.
