RENAULT HAS REVIVED the Estafette as a high-tech, city-focused load carrier. The new concept previews the debut model from the French company’s tie-up with Volvo Trucks, called Flexis, and it has been designed to stand out from the “anonymous”-looking diesel vans currently on sale. A CAR TRAVELLING at 60mph covers almost 27 metres in one second – the length of a grand slam tennis court and a bit more. Linked to the driver’s reaction time, it’s a frighteningly long way – and underestimating the distance cars travel at speed is one way distracted drivers get into trouble. Harman, maker of audio and in-car tech, has come up with an alternative to a head-up display to reduce the time it takes for drivers to gather information. Called Ready Vision Qvue, it displays information on the black reflective strip at the base of windscreen glass, called the ‘frit’. BE LIKE PORSCHE I know this has been talked about for a while, but I mourn the loss of a brand that falls within the realms of affordability for those of us who aren’t company directors. Jaguar has offered a fresh alternative to the German marques, but moving so far upmarket will make its products no longer affordable. Porsche manages to be aspirational yet affordable, starting from the excellent Cayman and Boxster and working up the model line-up or just refreshing the superb cars at the entry point. Jaguar could have learned a lot from Porsche, rather than following an aspiration to be an alternative to Bentley. Bup the groundbreaking X5 with the smaller X3 was a pivotal moment for a firm then best known for sharp-handling saloons and estates, paving the way for the subsequent huge expansion of its Sports Activity Vehicle – you know, SAV – line-up. Yes, it’s an Audi RS6 with retro wheels, silly with retro wheels, silly graphics and a £176,975 price. AUDI IS GEARING up for the launch of a hardcore electric off-roader – and a distinctive prototype has been spotted testing at a company facility in Germany. Based on the upcoming Q6 E-tron Sportback, it is dramatically taller and wider than the regular Q6 and features swollen arches, a more aggressive-looking front bumper, redesigned daytime-running lights and larger air intakes. Thick-walled all-terrain tyres and a similar roof rack to that of the limitedrun Q8 E-tron Edition Dakar suggest that Audi could be readying a similar version of the Q6, albeit with a much more overt focus on off-road performance. MG sibling brand Maxus has revealeda four-wheel-drive electric pick-up truck – the first of its kind available in the UK. Called the eTerron 9, it is a follow-up to the Maxus T90EV, which was the UK’s first electric pick-up but rear-driven only. It’s slightly larger than the Ford Ranger, with its rear bed measuring 2.4m long. The rear bulkhead of the cab can be dropped to allow for especially long loads and there’s also a 236-litre compartment under the bonnet. Towing capacity is rated at a competitive 3500kg. “QUALITY MUST BE improved.” That was the message repeated constantly by McLaren CEO Michael Leiters on his arrival in Woking in 2022, and in his first interview with us. It is far from the most exciting topic in the industry yet it’s about as important as it gets: what use is all that thrilling performance if a warning light comes on every five minutes? The focus of development for this fourth-generation BMW 1 Series was found in the data. According to anonymised data collected from consenting customers, 1 Series drivers are more given to ‘spirited’ driving than the owners of any other model in the firm’s line-up. It might seem a little counterintuitive but, counterintuitive but, for the time being at least, this car is as big as a Polestar is going to get. Having been a one-model manufacturer for a couple of years, the Swedish brand is now ushering in a wave of new cars that will expand its line-up towards 2026. The Polestars 4, 5 and 6 will eventually populate an expanded network of UK dealerships. But, while those all might sound like notionally larger cars than a Polestar 3, none will be. MEET PEUGEOT’S FIRST hybrid seven-seater. All right, that may not sound exciting, but the new third-generation 5008 is also the brand’s first plug-in hybrid seven-seater and first electric seven-seater, so it’s actually quite a big deal. Since the PHEV won’t be available until 2025 and Peugeot expects the hybrid to be the best-seller, we’re focusing on that here. It combines a 1.2-litre turbo petrol triple with an electric motor and a 0.9kWh battery. Efficiency is the priority, and so it scores an official 52.5mpg. We saw only 44.0mpg on our test drive, but that’s still decent, and CO 2 is rated at 122g/km, putting it in the 29% BIK tax bracket and beating the Kia Sorento Hybrid (158g/km, 36%). The hardy but handsome Land Rover Discovery 4 is one of the best secondhand 4x4s you can buy today, and its go-anywhere usability and load-lugging versatility can be yours for as little as £3000. Toyota looks to be readying its GR Corollahot hatchback for a European launch as prototypes begin testing at the Nürburgring. Hot hatch fans have long called for Toyota to bring the Gazoo Racing variant of the Corolla to Europe. The standard car is the Japanese brand’s third-biggest seller in the region, behind the Yaris and the Yaris Cross. Toyota’s performance division already has a strong presence in Europe with its three current models: the GR Yaris, GR Supra and GR86. Dealers are offering discounts of more than 50% on ex-demonstrator electric cars as they battle slowing demand for used EVs. The incentives mean that low-mileage examples of EVs such as the Nissan Leaf and Vauxhall Mokka Electric can be bought for less than their nearest petrol-powered equivalents with similar mileage. The incentives are in part to ensure the ex-demo EVs undercut new models, which are also being offered with sharp discounts to boost sales as manufacturers try to hit their zero-emission vehicle mandate targets. The Ioniq 5 N arrived to much fanfare around to much fanfare around its torque-vectoring and simulated gearshift party tricks, but it also introduced other tweaks to the Ioniq 5 line, such as an upgraded interior and a bigger battery. Those have now trickled down to the normal car. The battery has been upgraded from 58kWh to 63kWh for the smaller one, and 77kWh to 84kWh for the bigger one driven here. As before, the single-motor rear-drive model is reasonably efficient, returning about 3.3mpkWh in mixed use, so it’s now good for a real 277 miles. The new Volkswagen Golf GTI is not electric and it’s not a hybrid, not even a mild one. In fact, it seems to carry on in much the same way it has done for nearly 50 years, being a simple but sensible take on the hot hatch that’s received incremental, pointed updates with every new generation and mid-cycle facelift.
