A “compelling” study of coercive control, the novel is told from the point of view of Penny’s timid younger wife, Zoe, who has been bullied for years but has decided at last to escape their marriage with their children. Zoe’s plan must be executed in a day, creating a thriller-like tension intensified by the fact that their co-parents – the children’s biological father and his sister – are manipulative monsters too. It’s doubtful, however, that many artists producing them are doing so with quite the panache of Hayley Barker (b.1973). The American artist paints in a style that could be summed up as two parts late van Gogh to one part 1970s Hockney, and she appears to specialise in large-scale but unostentatious scenes of her Los Angeles garden, largely based on photographs. If that sounds run of the mill in terms of influence, objective and method, think again: the works here are formidably accomplished compositions in which no mark feels unnecessary. A review into the care of the Nottingham knife attacker Valdo Calocane has found “a series of errors, omissions and misjudgements” in his treatment. The Care Quality Commission said the risks posed by Calocane’s condition – he had been diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia – were downplayed by the trust overseeing his care, although he was “acutely unwell”, wasn’t taking his medication, and had little “acceptance of his condition”. Attempts by his family to raise concerns were not consistently acted on; and he was discharged from hospital back to his GP in 2022 despite clear evidence that he would relapse into “aggressive behaviour”. A 900-calorie a day soup and shake diet, prescribed to patients with type 2 diabetes, has put as many as a third of them into remission, researchers have found. Since 2020, some 25,000 people have been offered the year-long scheme by their doctors. The study involved 1,740 of them. Its results showed that the 945 people who managed to complete the programme lost around 10kg on average, and a third of them put their type 2 diabetes into remission (having lost 16kg on average). In early March 2022, when his country seemed in danger of falling to the Russians, it occurred to Leonid Marushchak, a historian by training, to call the director of a museum in eastern Ukraine to check that a collection of 20th century pottery was safe. It was coined in the 1960s to describe straight men’s unconscious fear of being seen as gay. The term has since expanded to cover anti-gay bigotry and hatred, while at the same time retaining “a penumbra of vagueness” that allows people to use it as an often undeserved slur. Dementia is not inevitable Roughly 55 million people worldwide are living with dementia, and ten million new cases are diagnosed annually. But almost half of them are due to “modifiable risk factors” – things we can change – and so could, in theory, be prevented or delayed, a new report has found. “Many people around the world believe dementia is inevitable but it’s not,” said Prof Gill Livingston, lead author of the Lancet Commission on Dementia’s report. She and 26 other dementia specialists reviewed the latest research on the condition, and found that 14 lifestyle, medical and environmental factors were, together, responsible for 45% of cases.
