Coastal marten
A team of researchers from Oregon State University, US, have been studying coastal martens in northern California. Scientists used to think they were extinct, until a small population was spotted in 1996. Now it’s thought they number around 500.
• LIFESPAN: Up to 14 years.
• HABITAT: Old, undisturbed forests.
• SIZE: Up to 71 centimetres.
• DIET: Mainly small mammals, as well as berries, birds, eggs, insects and reptiles.
