team of experts have A launched a small robot submarine on a mission around the world. Scientists from Teledyne Marine, who make underwater equipment, and Rutgers University in New Jersey, US, worked on the device. The 2.57-metre glider, called Redwing, aims to travel around the world, taking around five years and gathering data on sea currents and temperatures. Redwing uses a battery-powered buoyancy engine, which causes it to sink to about 1,000 metres and then rise to just below the surface, again and again, travelling at about one mile per hour.
