These islands are nothing if not weather-obsessed, as the subject-matter of our small-talk proves. Over the last two years, garden centres – partly thanks to their excellent ventilation – have been able to open more than many other places. Wandering among the plants, having a cuppa and browsing local foods and gifts was a novel pleasure when much else was closed. On top of that, the best garden centres and nurseries were pillars during the pandemic, supporting the local community and delivering to those in lockdown. The report, conducted by the Geena Davis Institute, found that girls are often confident to engage in all types of play and creative activities, but remain held back by society’s ingrained gender stereotypes.
