WHEN the 1860 Indian indentured workers arrived in Natal colony, the bulk of them were assigned to Mount Edgecombe and surrounding sugar estates. Mount Edgecombe therefore became one of the hubs of Tamil in South Africa and the birthplace of a few Tamil bands, such as Santana Eastern.
Initially, Dixon and Bala Pillay, brothers from Mount Edgecombe, together with other members named Sunil, Jacob, Vanindhran and Alec, founded a Western band called New Mother’s Creation in 1972.
As the demand rose for Indian music, the band changed to specialise in Indian music and changed its name to Santana Eastern with the inclusion of a few more members, namely, Nans Sanker and his brother Krishant and their first female vocalist Leelu Pillay.
