THE Phoenix Settlement Trust, located on the homestead of Mahatma Gandhi, is upgrading its premises and requires community assistance.
Gandhi arrived in South Africa in 1893 to represent businessman Dada Abdulla in a civil court case. The peace activist then bought 100 acres (40ha) of land in 1904.
According to sahistory.org.za, it was on this settlement that he started his journey of transforming from a successful lawyer to a simple peasant with a passion for liberation, non-violence and spirituality.
“Here, on this land, Gandhi began his experiments with communal living, non-possession, interfaith harmony, simplicity, environmental protection, conservation, manual labour, social and economic justice, non-violent action, principles of education and truth,” said the website.
