HONDA TO BUILD CUT-PRICE INDIAN MIDDLEWEIGHT Honda are putting together plans to build an Indian-manufactured middleweight bike, which they are looking to export to the rest of the world, and which we suspect will be a parallel twin. They won’t be the first to do so – BMW’s and KTM’s 300cc-ish A2 bikes are built on the sub-continent, too. DUCATI ROLLING IN IT Ducati are swimming in Euros after announcing a record turnover of €731 million and a profit of €54 million. Hopefully they’ll be putting a chunk of that money into their new V4. The up, down soap opera of MV Agusta continues, with boss Giovanni Castiglioni saying the firm is set for a period of stability. In a recent interview, he admitted there had been supply problems, but that a money injection from Russian investors Black Ocean had allowed production to satisfy orders. It’s predicted that we’ll see some new MVs soon – the F4 and the F3 aren’t Euro 4-compliant but they’ve said they’re concentrating on a new four-pot Brutale instead of a superbike. In other MV news, a number of UK owners are still waiting for a reg doc or a refund after they were left with a bike they don’t legally own when some former UK dealers are alleged to have sold them bikes before closing down.…

Surprisingly, Honda’s first 2017 aero effort was the most basic of the lot; surprising because this is a company that’s been involved in Formula One for decades and now manufactures jet planes! “This looks like a bit of an afterthought,” says Rowland-Rouse. “It’s a standard fairing, with a skin wrapped around last year’s wing. The skin is a carbon-based rapid prototype [from a 3D printer]. We use this system all the time in F1; if we need a last-minute part, we churn it out and put it on the car.” Honda’s first solution didn’t work well: Marquez crashed and blamed the accident on the aero. But now that Honda know where the aero race is going, it will be interesting to see what they come up with next.…

Don’t get overwhelmed Rebuilding a bike can be overwhelming, and that’s why so many people give up. I did the same; my 916 was in boxes for 10 years. Treat it as several small projects that combine into one large one and it becomes manageable. Walk away If you get stuck, don’t be afraid to walk away for a while. Mow the lawn, go for a walk, just do anything to take your mind off the job. I found that when I was shaving the answers to tough problems often popped into my mind! Here’s a thing we spent a day dicking around on this month. Yamaha launched a new T-Max alongside the MT-10 SP (mostly for the benefit of the Euro lot, who love them more than stinky cheese and three-hour lunches). It seems expensive but they out-sell R1s and are surprisingly good for arsing around on at high speed as well as getting to work with a three-course lunch stowed under the seat. And if it all gets too much, you can always set the cruise control and have a snooze on the pillion seat...…

The GP17’s so-called ‘hammerhead shark’ bodywork does what engineers are supposed to do: push the rules to the very limit. And it does more than that. The radical design has had jaws dropping up and down pit lane because none of the other factories had expected anything like this. Aprilia’s first go is an odd one: the downforce aero in the RS-GP’s new upper fairing looks more like a NACA duct, as used in race fairings since the 1980s. “It’s a restrained solution – a duct with a small vane inside – and I can’t see it being a particularly strong solution,” says Rowland-Rouse. “But it’s got to be doing something because this stuff costs a lot of money. I suspect they farmed out the work to an Italian aero specialist with a wind tunnel and CFD [Computational Fluid Dynamics] facility; someone like Dallara or Aerolab, who have designed F1 cars.”…

Suzuki has become the first to field a VVT superbike, using a clever inlet cam phaser that uses centripetal force rather than hydraulics UNLESS YOU’VE been living in a cave for the last couple of years you’ll be familiar with the term ‘Euro 4’. The current European emissions limits for bikes came into force in two stages – newly type-approved models had to comply from the start of 2016 and carry-over bikes had to be updated to meet the limits from January 1, 2017. For manufacturers, it’s old news; all bike engineers’ eyes are now firmly on the next-stage ‘Euro 5’ limits which represent a much bigger step. A Cambridgeshire S1000RR rider has been jailed after a series of high-speed police chases. Paul Whyatt, 57, used a false numberplate and made off from cops on a number of occasions. After sentencing, police released a video of him pulling away from a pursuit car showing 148mph. He was finally recognised by his rucksack and tracked down after one chase on his genuine plates. Whyatt was sentenced to 30 months for dangerous driving and conspiracy to pervert the course of justice.…

Yamaha’s design is the most elegant solution: two aero vanes inside each side of a widened fairing. “It’s a neat little solution, but the effect will be much less than what they had last year,” says Rowland-Rouse. “They’ve presumably looked at the maximum width allowed, then positioned a couple of vanes in there, because they’re more like vanes than wings. Then they’ve run the fairing skin around the outside of the vanes. I’d say the gap between the two vanes is too small because the two surfaces are really close to each other, so the low pressure underneath the upper vane may interfere with the high pressure [for downforce] of the lower vane.
