When writing his essay for our anniversary package (“Waiting for a Gay Superman,” page 84), Davis was taken back to a time when he wasn’t so comfortable with his orientation in the hyper-masculine sports world. “I was trying to distance myself from other men whose gender performance didn’t benefit me,” he says. Hargrave’s shoot with Fifth Harmony member Lauren Jauregui for this issue (“Lauren Jauregui, Pop Anarchist,” page 17) was a glimpse into the past. “We were going for a 1960s vibe, and she was totally comfortable with the retro clothes and feel,” the photographer says.
