Actors often go to great lengths to land dream roles. In Roberta Colindrez’s case, roughly 1,000 miles. Last year, the Monterrey, Mexico, native was up for a pivotal role in Transparent showrunner Jill Soloway’s new Amazon comedy I Love Dick, but because she was starring in the Tony-winning Broadway musical Fun Home at the time, she was unable to audition in person. She’d made a tape to send to Soloway, but when she played it back, it felt lackluster. Tommy Pico’s second collection of poetry, Nature Poem, is a product of spite. On a recent night out drinking with his best friend, talk turned to stereotypes: The Brooklyn-based, Native American writer’s friend said she wouldn’t eat fried chicken or watermelon in front of white people because, as a black woman, she didn’t want to play into those stereotypes. Many applied, three were chosen, but there could only be one winner. On March 30, at a special gala party in Los Angeles, DaShaun Hightower was presented with the annual Out Fashion Vanguard Award. Life Stories While the overarching narrative of the queer community has a lot of common threads, we all have our own stories to tell. “Yup, he’s a bisexual warlock,” says Harry Shum Jr. of his 400-year-old character on the Freefrom fantasy series Shadowhunters. “When you live that long, you have some stories.” Ever since Anne Rice poured a sarcophagus’s worth of same-sex longing into her vampire novels, fans of the genre have jonesed for homoerotic action among creatures of the night.
