Well, it’s a quilt that’s made up of a number of various blocks that are all unique and non-repeating. The blocks are often constructed using a number of different methods, so that people could “sample” various techniques. Samplers used to be the quilt you made when you were starting out, because they are great teaching tools. Have you seen all of the amazing quilts on social media lately that look like they are three-dimensional? Whether they’re an optical illusion or truly created in three dimensions, these quilts really pop! Tessellating designs and 3D elements that create texture and depth are not new ideas to quilters, but it does seem like the modern quilting world has been embracing these types of designs recently. There are many methods to achieve these types of optical illusion quilts if you want to make a 2D quilt that appears to be three-dimensional. PREPARING YOUR FABRICS Cut fabric pieces using the paper templates as a guide, cutting the fabric at least in larger than the template on all sides. Secure the template to the wrong side of each fabric piece, using a dab of washable glue or a pin. BASTING There are various methods of basting the fabric pieces to the paper templates. Our preferred method is corner tacking, but you can find a complete guide to all the methods on the LP&Q website. CORNER TACKING With this method the fabric is folded round the template and stitches are used to hold the fabric in place at the corners.
