The effects of the lead ban in wetlands in Italy, at least for now, seem to have been significantly mitigated. In the recent past, even though overshadowed by light machine guns like the FN Minimi, the role of infantry assault support was assigned to slightly modified versions of assault rifles with slightly longer or heavier barrels, integrated bipods, and extended magazines. Some examples include the Kalashnikov RPK-74, the British SA-80/L-86, or the M-27 IAR. The advantages of these solutions were high parts commonality with the assault rifles from which they derived, identical operation and handling, and only slightly higher weight than the original version.
