BROCCOLI may be the key to treating schizophrenia! Scientists have found extracts of the vegetable can tweak chemical imbalances in the brains of people with the mental disorder. In testing, a compound derived from broccoli sprouts, called sulforaphane, was used to lower the levels of two chemicals that send messages between brain cells that have been linked to schizophrenia. Schizophrenia affects about 21 million people worldwide, but current medications leave patients with the “shakes,” restlessness and stiffness. The study, conducted at Johns Hopkins Hospital, did not prove the compound can help relieve symptoms — only that it may play a role in restoring the chemical imbalance.
