Building something is never easy. When you start a project, whether it’s a renovation or a new build, the challenges are intense. Terrifying, even. The cost, the logistics, the time, and the sacrifices can cloud your judgment and dampen your ambition. Do not let them. The biggest mistake is believing that something daunting must be impossible, or—this is even worse—that you are not up to the task. Making an impact is not guaranteed. Mistakes are okay. If you’re hoping for admiration from others, try to let that go. Caring what others think is poison to the creative mind. Trust your gut, and please yourself first. Kamil Bialous Know Your Angles page 86 Vancouver photographer Kamil Bialous felt lost driving through Winnipeg, searching for the house he was sent to shoot for this issue. “It was a very stereotypical suburban neighborhood with lookalike homes finished in beige stucco and cream stone. I actually stopped to double-check I was on the correct street,” Bialous remembers. Eventually he found the angular, ultramodern house, an anomaly in the area. “I think it reflects the idea that, just because you enjoy a suburban life with your kids, it doesn’t mean you have to live in a cookie-cutter home,” he says. ILLUSTRATIONS BY Yann Kebbi The Pine Ridge Reservation in Porcupine, South Dakota, is home to 35,000 members of the Oglala Lakota Nation and comprises some of the poorest counties in the country. Besides widespread unemployment, the area struggles with overcrowded housing and, by some estimates, may require 4,000 new houses. In 2013 a local nonprofit, the Thunder Valley Community Development Corp., commissioned a master plan for an eco-friendly community that would generate economic, cultural, and social opportunities for Pine Ridge. The plan calls for a 34-acre mixed-use development, estimated to cost $60 million, with roughly 100 units of affordable housing. The first phase includes 21 units that the community is helping to build. “Whenever you’re building houses, you have the opportunity to use that product as a workforce-development training program,”…

• Last night I opened the May/June issue and reread your Editor’s Letter that begins, “Don’t waste time trying to have a perfect home.” I’ve devoted two years to a remodel. I’ve consulted with four architects and four designers, spent the cost of a new car doing it, and concluded that you have to kiss a lot of frogs to find a prince or princess. “Find and create your own moments of beauty” is very good advice. —Roger Magyar • Regarding the home in Sweden in the September/October issue, the contrast between stark and ornate is too jarring for me. PHOTOS BY Jamie Chung On a sweeping stretch of the Rocky Mountain foothills in Alberta, Canada, inside a brick-walled, metal-beamed room, blacksmith Japheth Howard works against a backdrop that looks like a snapshot from the Industrial Revolution. But it’s a workshop built for contemporary ambitions. Instead, his son, architect Anthony Belluschi, often acts as a matchmaker, helping to assure that the homes go to a worthy custodian. So it was that Aric Wood wound up halting plans to break ground on his dream home after Anthony convinced him to tour a Pietro-designed gem in Portland, Oregon, that was about to be vacated. Known as the Sutor House, it was completed in 1938. “He just fell in love,” the younger Belluschi remembers. “And he had the right sensitivity about the provenance of the house. PHOTOS BY Michael Schmidt Working as designer, contractor, and builder, Samantha Mink took an unremarkable structure built in the 1950s and transformed it into a home for herself and her dog, Winston. “Because of its location on the street, I kept a kind of stern exterior where you can’t really see into the house,” she says. She treated the Douglas fir with a natural mineral wash and an exterior stain to give the wood dimension. When architectural designer Samantha Mink fell in love with what she calls “a weirdo house on a unique street” in Culver City, California, she knew its transformation would mean working within especially tight constraints. Her $125,000 budget precluded hiring even a contractor, so she resolved to do as much of the renovation as possible herself.…

But the house they eventually bought was exactly the opposite: a 1974 Vermont Frames kit house with heart-pine wall paneling and ceilings, few windows, and the look of a dark cottage. Andrew, however, has never lacked vision. The White Stuff PHOTO BY Lee Hyunjune and the snowy peaks of nearby Mount Seorak, Woojin Lim of Paris-based studio AEV Architectures set out to design a house in Sokcho, South Korea, that would be “audaciously” and “unalterably” white The secret behind the home’s uniformly monochromatic exterior is LG Hausys’s solid surface creation, Hi-Macs. Similar to DuPont’s Corian, the material is easily shaped with heat and can be mounted flush without visible joints. It’s also highly weather-resistant. But because Hi-Macs is traditionally reserved for kitchens, local artisans weren’t accustomed to working with it outdoors. To oversee the delicate process, Lim, who is originally from South Korea, returned home for the first time in 20 years.…
