Thanks to Raf Simons, this year’s New York Fashion Week (NYFW) and New York Fashion Week: Men’s (NYFW: Men’s) is hotter than ever. Not only did he present his debut collection with Calvin Klein at NYFW, he also chose the Big Apple to showcase Raf Simon-the-brand’s fall/ winter 2017 collection. But before Raf Simons-the-brand showcased its collection, first came Joseph Abboud. His show was held at St. Stephen’s church in Lexington Avenue. The gothic church was definitely an ideal venue considering the collection’s dark and mysterious feel with its lavish long coats and dark color palette of black, dark grey and dark blue. The life story of top model David Friend sounds like something tailor-made for a best-selling novel or the script for an Oscar-nominated drama movie. There’s the childhood spent in a small town in Florida, there’s the boundless creativity kindled by a charmingly artistic and closeknit family, there’s the years spent behind the scenes as a stylist followed by a momentous runway debut. Only, of course, all of this is real. Last year, Friend appeared as a surprise addition—the only male model, actually— during the unveiling of Anthony Vaccarello’s first collection for Saint Laurent. Outdoor weddings: The formality of a suit is needed at a wedding ceremony, but if it’s held at an outdoor venue, the added twist of a pair of sneakers becomes more acceptable and is also quite practical, obviously. 2. Besides great food and monumental landmarks, Italy has long been famous for its artisans. Just look at how the words “Italian” and “craftsmanship” go together so naturally and how the two together has basically become synonymous with fine quality. While this is, of course, not always true, there are plenty of examples that live up to it. Last August, renowned Indonesian designer Edward Hutabarat held an exhibition titled “Tangan-Tangan Renta” (which literally means “old hands”) centered on the striped woven fabric known as lurik. The exhibition went on for a week featuring several installations, photographs and videos about the textile—the result of seven years of research. The exhibition was opened by a fashion show featuring the traditional textile. None of the pieces on show, however, were sold to the general public. As a matter of fact, Hutabarat no longer runs any boutiques and offers his works in a more personalized, way.
