Faced with a moral dilemma and a life-or-death situation, would you put your trust in a computer? No, neither would we
GOOD NEWS, EVERYBODY: you no longer need to crash your car yourself, as a computer can now do it for you. It was bound to happen sooner or later, but when Google’s self-driving car recently hit a bus, it brought home that self-driving cars don’t automatically make our roads safe.
Admittedly, the crash only took place at a rather sedate 2mph; it was a combination of operator error and software error; and nobody was hurt. However, the car still made the definite decision to move forwards and hit the bus, and Google has taken the blame in this case.
That’s fine, but let’s face it, computers…
