During his sentencing hearing the following week, Rivas blamed his life of crime on a childhood blighted by abuse. But forensic psychiatrist Dr Richard E Coons testified that Rivas was a career criminal who continued ‘business as usual’ after killing Officer Hawkins, and said that he could not be rehabilitated. After being sentenced to death and put on death row, Rivas was executed by lethal injection in Huntsville, Texas, on 29 February 2012.
