Our mission: Be the go-to source for those on a quest to build their firearms collection with superior hardware by showcasing an unprecedented number of best-in-class guns. While most of the shooting community waits with bated breath for the newest high-capacity polymer defensive handgun to be released, there is a certain percentage of our group that could care less. Last year’s roundup for Ballistic’s Best tactical shotguns included all semi-automatics since we wanted an apples to apples comparison. This year, the choice was obvious: pump-action only. The 12-gauge pump shotgun has been the backbone of law enforcement and home defense long arms since before Stoner invented the M16. It has been adapted to breach doors, fire less-lethal projectiles, deploy CS gas, tazers, birdshot, buckshot and slugs. America’s favorite rifle has definitely evolved over the years. That evolution has brought us better, smaller, lighter and nicer looking guns in the past few years. Because of the evolution of the AR platform, pistols are becoming the new normal. The AR pistol has shown up from nearly every manufacturer, and I personally love them. In fact, I don’t just love them, I am kind of obsessed with them—the look, the feel and the fireballs. Simply put, they are just awesome. This has been a banner year for firearm sales, and the AR remains one of the best-selling rifle platforms. Politics, unrest and an overall need for home and personal protection have driven much of the demand, but not all. Turbulent times aside, unmatched ergonomics, simple operation, multiple calibers and infinite customization will keep the AR platform at the top for years to come. Having been in the industry for nearly 25 years, nothing has approached today’s level of interest in firearms, and the AR in particular. Time flies…usually. The year 2020 has been an odd one, but it’s about to be put in the rearview mirror for better or worse. The days have cooled, the leaves are starting to turn and a hint of wood smoke now lingers in the evening air. These annual occurrences are how many of us mark the transition from one year to the next. As we close out 2020, I think readers will agree that it was a year unlike any other. Manufacturers struggled to keep up with demand, new products were put on hold and ammo shelves were empty. As a result, this year’s candidates are a mix of something old and something new. However, we have never had a more equally balanced group of revolvers to test. The lineup for this year includes the Colt Python, Chiappa Rhino, Kimber K6 Combat, Korth Silver Mongoose and the Smith & Wesson Model 19 Classic. All five are double-action/single-action revolvers, they share the same caliber (.357 Magnum) and with the exception of the Rhino, all have a 4-inch (or so) barrel. 2020 has been the year of firsts in many ways and that sentiment carries over into this year’s Ballistic’s Best bolt-action rifle segment. While we have some returning names to the category, we have four brands that are completely new to the bolt-action scene and they took no shortcuts on their efforts to drop products that would grab the attention of prospective shooters. These four companies have played solidly in other areas with no venture into the manually operated rifle space. Two of the brands are known for furnishing us with AR platforms, while the other two make semi-auto pistols and rifles. Our review team is different this year.
