A LENGTHY HISTORY Even in these days of machine-washable, mass-produced textiles, we can (often) gauge the tone of an occasion by the kind of cloth (or lack of it) on the table. Vintage chintz sheets say bridal; burlap runners over undyed linen signal a rustic country wedding; checked oilcloth is a classic for a backyard barbecue. Every morning I wake up and play a game in my head: I look outside to see the first bird of my day.
