This year, despite a global pandemic, Dehesa de los Canónigos has something to celebrate: Decanter magazine has awarded its Luis Sanz Busto Gran Reserva 2010 “97 points”. This wine is a tribute to the father of the family who owns this winery located in Ribera del Duero and is only produced in exceptional years (the last was 2001). It is crafted from grapes grown in an 80-year-old vineyard. Today, Luis Sanz’ sons Iván and Beln are at the winery’s helm. Iván handles the sales side and Belén attends to the work in the vineyards and winery. They took over a few years ago and the winery is now one of the Ribera del Duero’s top wineries. The world’s most awarded Champagne House, Louis Roederer has broken another record by being the first House to repeat this accolade. Robert Parker recently awarded 100 points to the Louis Roederer Cristal Rosé 2008, putting it at the pinnacle of all sparkling wines and making Roederer the first producer to be able to boast of two champagnes with 100 Parker points. Created by Jean-Claude Rouzaud in 1974, Louis Roederer Cristal Rosé is a champagne crafted from a selection of old Pinot Noir vines, today grown biodynamically. GARNACHA We continue our journey around the world via its different grape varieties. Today it is one of my favourites, the Garnacha. When wine people talk about “old world” and “new world” countries, they are referring to those countries who were pioneers in the cultivation of the vine and, consequently, in winemaking, versus those who introduced the model without having any previous wine culture or heritage. I would venture to say that the Garnacha perfectly fits the description of an old world variety as it is found in all three countries of the Mediterranean basin: France, Italy and Spain.
