EMT’s missing links
RAIL 810 reports on possible improvements to East Midlands Trains services. By far the biggest deficiency is the lack of through trains from major places on the route to destinations beyond Sheffield, but EMT aspirations appear to be limited to improved connections.
We are now in the 21st century. We should be actively planning for the ability of passengers to travel directly from large conurbations such as Luton, Bedford, Kettering, Leicester and Loughborough (and East Midlands and Luton Airports) to Leeds, York/East Coast Main Line, Manchester, Preston/West Coast Main LIne and Liverpool.
Nottingham and Chesterfield do currently have hourly through trains (inadequate Class 158 DMUs) to Leeds, Manchester and Liverpool, involving reversal at Sheffield, and Derby and Chesterfield both have regular CrossCountry services to the North East,…
