It’s long been possible to physically connect multiple graphics cards together to help with rendering. AMD’s proprietary technology that enables this is called CrossFire, while Nvidia’s approach is called Scalable Link Interface (SLI). Historically, however, multi-GPU computing has been a bit of a pain: only certain cards have supported it, and to keep everything in sync you’ve needed to use identical GPUs. Nvidia has also required you to clip on a physical connector to join your cards together. This technology is still supported – see our feature table for details of which cards support it. If there’s a single term that creates greater cause of confusion in IT than “virtual server”, I haven’t come across it. According to a Colombia University research paper, The Cost of Latency in High-Frequency Trading, a one-millisecond advantage in latency can be worth upwards of $100 million per year to a trader. Figures for latency across networks are often carefully guarded, as traders running fast networks try to protect their advantages.
