The Winchester-based Friends of King Alfred Buses (FoKAB) has confirmed details of its Original King Alfred Buses Running Day in and around the city on Monday 2 May 2022. Up to 12 traditional King Alfred buses ranging in age from 91 years old to a mere 52 will be recreating the old days, in company with several heritage buses and coaches originating from other local operators. We are so pleased that Allen Eaton MBE has been in touch as he has decided to come out of retirement from the defunct Hollowell Steam & Heavy Horse Show, Northamptonshire which he staged for 33 years. He says the new show is to be known as Hollowell Steam & Vintage Rally. David Smith, head of the Technical Services Unit of the NTET, has supplied this update on the current situation regarding the supply of coal for heritage use. Ffos-y-Fran: I start with what is hopefully some good news. We have learnt of a deal being brokered between Hargreaves and the owners of Ffos-y-Fran which, if successful, could see lump coal being transported from the mine to Hargreaves’ own grading plant near Cardiff. Although the deal is not quite done, Paul Paddock of Hargreaves advises that they are very hopeful of making it work. If so, Ffos coal could be back on the heritage market in around 3-4 weeks and then until the mine closes sometime in October 2022. Great Dorset Steam Fair in Tarrant Hinton has received a grant of £156,000 from the Government’s latest round of the Culture Recovery Fund to help the organisation recover from the impact of the Covid pandemic. Back in 1961 a group of local enthusiasts decided to hold a small traction engine rally at Church Stretton after it looked as if the annual carnival might be cancelled due to the lack of floats. The event duly took place on August 7 that year, The Society and the County of Salop Rally were born. By 1970, the rally had become a two-day event and had moved to Bishop’s Castle where three different sites were used for the rally over the years. On the event’s 21st anniversary, a special road run was organised which ran back to the rally’s former venue at Church Stretton, while for the 25th anniversary, a run to the Sentinel works in Shrewsbury was organised. We are grateful to Marek Ciesielski for much of the information below regarding a return to steam of a unique steam tractor in Poland. For very many years this machine had been a static exhibit at the country’s Museum of National Agriculture and Agrarian Food Industry at Szreniawa close to Poznań. This location is served by the regular steam-hauled local passenger service from Wolstyn to Poznań on the country’s main line network. The machine in question is a Cegielski steam tractor which was manufactured in Poznań but, it should be pointed out that at the time the order was placed, the city was known as Posen since it was in Germany. 2021 has seen the return to the rally field of many engines that have been subject to extensive restoration projects which have been completed during the Covid-19 pandemic lockdowns. One such engine is the Vickery brothers, Paul and Ian’s superb Burrell single 7nhp agricultural engine, No. 2507 of 1902. Now resplendent in a new lined crimson paint job the engine has been a highlight at local events following the resumption of rallies in 2021. Often to be seen paired with another of the Vickery’s restorations, a 1926 Fowler living van, the brothers have been busy during lock down returning the engine to the condition it left the Thetford works when delivered to its first owners in Suffolk. Although it is early days and the data gather will continue for several more weeks, it is important that we share some feedback from those who have already trialled the Trevithick Ovoid product specifically and another similar smoke-free anthracite-based ovoid products, as it is a ‘new’ fuel to many, if not all of us, particularly in a road steam application. Early indications of the ovoid products suggest that they provide good heat and steam generation under working conditions, with no/low visible emissions under all/most conditions. William ‘Harry’ Denton, one of West Yorkshire’s steam ‘characters’, passed away aged 91 in late November, reports Derek Rayner. He lived at Pool-in-Wharfedale and his working life started at the age of 15 with a milk round in Pool, soon becoming a bobbin maker, thus following in his family’s footsteps. Harry and his sister Eva lived in a property which was built for exservicemen after World War 1 and had some land adjacent to it to provide a space for a business. He became an agricultural contractor and with the demise of steam in that field, he used an early Nuffield TVO tractor followed by a Field Marshall - which is still in the family. He bought his first threshing machine at the age of 22 in 1952. Ten years…

The FBHVC has announced a new partnership with heritage digitisation company, Genus – a market leader in the digitisation of historical archives. Over the past couple of years, guidance around managing, preserving and future-proofing archives and records within the historic vehicle community has become an increasingly important area that the Federation has worked on in support of member clubs, museums and heritage organisations. The work began with the publication of the Federation’s ‘Essential Guide to Archiving’ booklet that can be downloaded from www.fbhvc.co.uk which has empowered a number of clubs to take control of their archiving by building effective inventories and catalogues of material that they hold. Some time ago, the vessel on which Road Roller Association member and one-time merchant seaman Gary Edwards was working docked in the Norwegian port of Stavanger. At a loose end for a while, Gary went for an exploratory walk around the vicinity of the harbour and was somewhat surprised to discover an Aveling & Porter steam roller plinthed in a children’s playground in the area of Kjelvene. Enquiries were made later which revealed that the roller had been purchased by the Stavanger Municipality for NOK10,000 in 1910 and it was used in the locality until the war came in 1940 when ‘Invicta’, as it had become known, was commandeered by the occupying forces for use on the runways etc at Sola airport. Back in August 2021, the central Queensland town of Clermont held its now renamed annual Festival, reports Andy Plunkett. It was previously Goldfest but since both resources are produced in the Clermont region, it was felt it would benefit from a name change to include the word ‘coal’. The Historical Centre there ran the Clermont community’s historic 8hp Aveling Porter compound steam traction engine No. 6803 in the grounds outside the complex. Old Glory readers some years ago would have read the story of this engine’s role in shifting what large structures were left close to the river in the town to a more elevated site nearby following the great flood there of late-1916. The engine’s firebox and boiler are original with a re-tube having been undertaken a decade ago.…

We were able to pop in to Bicknell’s Boiler Works near Liphook while in the area in December to see what the team were up to. As always they had plenty going on in the works, where the building is being reclad at the movement. As always their workmanship is top class, remember they make their own fireboxes including the incredible and unique Robey ‘pistol-style’ unit. Besides Garrett, Foden and Wallis engines that were in the works they are also rebuilding their own very rare 1916 Marshall Q class 7hp traction engine No. 70321 Firefly UR936. 3 OCTOBER 2021 The first weekend of October provided some beautiful autumnal sunshine for Robert and Jacquie Tyler’s annual road run, says Simon Colbeck. After an absence of two years, due to the pandemic, the sight and sound of steam meandering through the beautiful villages of the Vale of Belvoir made a welcome return. From the Tyler’s stable Garrett No. 33305 Mighty Atom, a 4CD tractor of 1918 was making its first appearance at the event having been welcomed into the Tyler fleet during lockdown. Another engine making its first appearance on the run from Whatton to Stathern was Burrell No. 3894 St Brannock of 1921. This remarkable miniature was constructed by Eitel Moch from near Hannover, reports Busso Hennecke. It took him about ten years to design and make. It’s based on a full-size DS type 25 steam tractor made to the design of Herr Hans Fritsch during World War 2. This latter machine was of 25 to 30hp, weighed 3.2 tons and its towing capacity was 5 to 8 tons. The East German (GDR) firm concerned was that of Sachsenberg which was based in the town of Rosslau on the River Elbe, about 35 miles south-east of Magdeburg. Over time, the company built river and coastal ships as well as steam engines and boilers - and during the war, they also produced about a dozen or so full-size steam tractors.
