‘Second-gen buys make total sense’ As the owner of a 1998 YZF-R1 (yes, in red and white…) I admit to having a soft spot for ‘first- generation’ sportsbikes. SENIOR WRITER Buyers making the switch from petrol to electric will be hit in the wallet thanks to shock cuts in the Government subsidy, although some bike firms are taking the hit themselves in the short-term. Any e-bikes costing over £10,000 will no longer receive a Government grant, while mopeds will get just £150 off. Previously, all new road-registered electrics would receive a price reduction of £1500 or 20% – whichever was smallest at the point of sale. New plans will see bikes priced up to £10,000 receive 35% off, up to a max of £500 and mopeds get 35% off, up to a value of £150. I felt bad so set aside some time to get it up on the paddock stands and give it some love... Maybe it’s because it’s always thought of as being maintenance-free compared to chain drive, but replacing the oil in a shaft-drive bike’s rear hub is one of those tasks that can get overlooked. Standard service replacement jobs such as engine oil, filter and plugs, always get the most attention while other critical but less obvious systems get neglected. Gino Rea has joined the factory Honda team for the 2022 Endurance World Championship season. The Brit will line-up alongside Josh Hook and Mike di Meglio at F.C.C TSR Honda France, after previously competing in the championship with privateer team Wojcik Racing Yamaha between 2019 and 2020. Rea guided the team to their first-ever podium when he finished second at the 2019 Bold’Or, before finishing third at the Estoril 12-Hour the following year. Honda’s riders will head to Spain and Japan for a winter test programme, before the new EWC seasons gets underway in France for the Le Mans 24-Hour event. ‘Rea will no longer be on the BSB grid’ Rea finished seventh there in 2020, before ending the season seventh overall. Less than two months after calling time on his ten-year MotoGP career, Danilo Petrucci will make his Dakar debut in Saudi Arabia. The two-time MotoGP race winner will race for KTM in what will be one of the biggest challenges of his career. Despite being an officially supported rider there can be no expectation in terms of results. The 31-year-old Italian is clearly extremely talented but he is a complete rookie in the world of rally. Petrucci has been training with the official KTM team but will be treating Dakar 2022 as one big learning experience which he will hope to build on in the future.
