For nearly three decades, the personal computer market has been all about more: more speed, more RAM, more pixels, more features. And sure enough, when Apple introduced OS X Mavericks at this year’s Worldwide Developers Conference, the company highlighted plenty of the operating system’s new capabilities, such as iCloud Keychain and better support for multiple displays. The keystone of Apple’s tenth release of OS X, however, is firmly in the less category—specifically, a dramatic reduction in power consumption. The experience of switching to iOS 7 is a bit like an American going to Europe: Some things might look superficially different at first, but beneath the unfamiliar veneer, things are fundamentally similar to what you’ve known. No matter how proficient you are with OS X and the apps that run on it, you’ll occasionally need a helping hand. Included with OS X, Help is available as the rightmost menu in every app. You can also press command-<Shift>-/ to jump to it. For starters, OS X’s Help lets you dig through menus and submenus quickly. Type label in the field, for example, and at the top of the results you’ll see the various items in Finder menus containing the word label. Items in your iTunes library need tags, or bits of information that identify them and help iTunes organize and sort them properly. These tags (aka metadata) tell iTunes what a file is: the type of file (music, movie, ebook, and so on), its name or title, and more. You need these tags to choose items, and to create smart playlists. Here’s how best to tag files in iTunes. You may not want to admit it, but you probably never post a photo to a social network without doing at least a little work. In late August, The Omni Group, a maker of popular Mac productivity apps, announced a tool that would scour a user’s hard drive looking for copies of the company’s software that were purchased from the Mac App Store. This tool, dubbed OmniKeyMaster, would then turn App Store receipts into Omni’s own licenses, giving users access to the company’s upgrade pricing options—which are not normally available through Apple’s sales channel. Alas, it now seems that the folks from Cupertino have, at least for now, put a damper on Omni’s efforts. The 7MB download requires iOS 6.1 or later, however, so owners of first-generation iPads won’t be able to install it. Reeder 2, like its predecessor, is deceptively simple. You sync your RSS subscriptions with a feed service and then browse stories by viewing individual sources or by making your way through a single list of unread items. The app caches story excerpts and displays them in an elegant format. Use the ‘Paste Item Exactly’ Command in the Finder You probably know that the Finder lets you copy and paste files and folders to shift them around: Select a file, choose Edit → Copy, navigate elsewhere, and choose Paste Item. The file then exists in two places. If you hold <Option>, Paste Item becomes Move Item Here, and rather than duplicating the file, you change its location on your Mac. Great! But here’s the hint: Hold both <Shift> and <Option>, and the command turns into Paste Item Exactly. (Try using command-<Shift>-<Option>-V if you’re dextrous.) When a new device comes out, it’s only natural to compare it to its immediate predecessor: Does this thing do something new that the last one couldn’t do? It’s a measuring stick, a way to put the new device into context. And when we’re talking iPhones, it’s a perfectly standard practice. But I think that comparing the iPhone 5c only to the model it replaces would be a mistake. Apple’s new streaming music service, iTunes Radio, has received a lot of attention, as it represents the first time Apple has broken away from the traditional “we sell, you buy” music model. Instead, on an iOS device running iOS 7 or a Mac/Windows computer with iTunes 11.1 and an Internet connection, you can stream music based on a song, artist, or genre of your choosing (or play one of Apple’s preconfigured stations)—at no cost.
