NEAR MISSES Pathologic 3 PC, PS5, Xbox Series While Ice-Pick Lodge sent a build of Pathologic 3 in mid-December, it wasn’t complete – the final part of the game was still being polished and held back until nearer the release date. That’s given us time to get to grips with most of this third entry in the foreboding and thought-provoking series, at least, and we’ve been enthralled so far. It seems to be in better technical shape than its predecessor, and more accessible, without sacrificing thematic density. In it, you find an early computer, in the Bletchley vacuum-tube sense, comprising a circular viewscreen (capable of displaying text and the occasional static image) and a split-flap display with a kind of gearstick mechanism inset beneath. During Tim Oxton’s Silkbulb Test you are shown a series of disturbing images and asked to make gut-instinct deductions about their nature. Is this picture of a man with giant bulging eyes, smiling at you with all his teeth bared, a picture of a ‘friend’? The photographs are real; the twisted details are added by Oxton. It’s a mixture of the authentic and the awful that characterises his overall style – he turns seemingly banal situations, such as living in a small city apartment, watching a slideshow or playing a pull-lever game of Higher Or Lower into brutal nightmares. Many players who frequented arcades at the beginning of the 1990s will remember the first time they saw Final Fight. Whether or not you knew of its existence before encountering the cabinet, once you were standing in front of it, it was hard to stifle a sense of awe.
