Trace your surname’s origins
Our surnames originate in the medieval era from many diverse sources. There are patronymic surnames named after an ancestor (Watson, Jones), descriptive names (Brown, Green), occupational names (Smith, Carpenter), and place names (Windsor, Hamilton). In my case, Paton is a Scottish name meaning ‘son of Patrick’. Variations include Patton, Patoune, MacFadden and Paterson.
Combine surname search with Y-DNA test
Taken on their own, surnames can’t reveal much about your direct ancestry because they originated so long ago. But they’re more useful when combined with other sources, such as Y-DNA studies. This research traces people who share the same Y (paternal) chromosome DNA connected to a particular surname. You can order a test through FamilyTreeDNA, with prices starting at $119 (about £95): www.snipca.com/45724.
