With its eclectic programme of opera, art, architecture and design, the London-based KT Wong Foundation has been bridging the creative landscapes of Britain and China since 2007, and established itself as a cultural force. According to its founder, Lady Linda Wong Davies (see W*163), the initial objective was simple. ‘I just wanted to show that China’s culture is more than terracotta warriors and Ming vases,’ she says. Ten years on, with countless exhibitions and performances under her belt, Davies shows no sign of slowing down. ‘When we started I was ignorant, but I was younger and fearless. Almond, cardamom and orange biscuits Makes 30 2 eggs 130g caster sugar zest of 1 medium orange 1 tbs coconut oil or melted butter 350g ground almonds 1 tsp baking powder ¼ tsp salt 8 whole cardamom pods, seeds removed and finely ground in a pestle and mortar 40g icing sugar • Line two baking trays with baking parchment and heat the oven to 180°C. HARD LINES Contemporary jewellery’s craft, creativity and killer curves Earlier this year Mads and Mikkel Kornerup, the sibling founders of Shamballa Jewels, finally signed the papers on what would become their first standalone US store. The space, on SoHo’s Mercer Street in New York, opens its doors this month, after a relatively quick but radical overhaul. The founders of the Copenhagen brand were clear about what they wanted, ‘an experience, for our American collectors to dive in to’. And what they wanted to communicate, Shamballa’s particular union of Eastern philosophy and Nordic design principles. They drafted in Danish design studio and wood specialist Barlby Carlsson, which created a striking centrepiece, a ‘floating’ golden mandala. Apeculiar house rises above the green panorama of vine-covered walls that hide the mansions of Mexico City’s upscale Las Lomas neighbourhood. Restored by renowned Mexican architect Alberto Kalach, the building stands four storeys tall and appears to be a small apartment complex, though in reality it is a one-bedroom, modern-day bachelor pad. The brutalist 1970s property had been abandoned for years before it was purchased by Moisés Micha in 2014. Co-founder of the Grupo Habita boutique hotel brand and an art collector, Micha saw the potential in the unusual, constricted structure, and commissioned Kalach for the restoration. Belgian architect Nicolas Schuybroek and interior designer Marc Merckx collaborated to create the interiors. Derwent London has built a reputation as one of the UK’s more forward-thinking property developers. Since its foundation in the mid-1980s, the company is as adept at working within London’s historic fabric as it is at giving new life to tired slices of mundane modernism. Projects include the game-changing Angel Building in Islington, Shoreditch’s fashionable Tea Building and the new White Collar Factory, looming above Old Street’s ‘Silicon Roundabout’. So when it came to updating its own Savile Row HQ, the pressure was on to create a true showcase for its enlightened approach. This April, Adrian Zecha, the legendary founder of the Aman Resorts group, quietly launched his new brand Azerai in the Laotian city of Luang Prabang. At first blush, the hotel is a stark contrast for the veteran hotelier, with twice as many rooms, each a third the size, and starting rates at least a third of the average Aman hotel. Yet Zecha says his latest venture is not a departure from the Aman model, but a different incarnation of the same ideal of good taste and restrained aesthetics. ‘It’s affordable luxury,’ he insists. Play fair FAIRMONT, MONTRÉAL The reopening of Montréal’s Fairmont The Queen Elizabeth, in the wake of a $140m top-to-toe renovation by Sid Lee Architecture, is a full circle moment. When it originally opened back in 1958, the convention hotel was the talk of the town for its innovations. It was one of the first hotels in North America to boast escalators, air conditioning and direct dial telephones in each room. Now, after a year under the knife, the 950-room grande dame is back on top form, and continues to innovate, adding an entire floor of work/ play spaces. Contemporary Thai design and craft are at a point of dynamic convergence. In creative pockets of Bangkok and Chiang Mai, young, forward-thinking designers and artists are teaming up with traditional craftspeople to create products that are inventive and modern but still identifiable as Thai originals. The figures are also looking good; bolstered by government support, a busy trade fair calendar and the burgeoning entrepreneurial community at Charoenkrung, Thailand’s creative industry now accounts for 13 per cent of the country’s GDP. After over a decade living and working in London as a strategy consultant, Turin-born Luca Faloni grew tired of returning home in pursuit of quality wardrobe staples. ‘In Italian cities, you know the neighbourhoods that sell good sweaters and shirts at a reasonable price. In London, the same stores just don’t exist,’ he says. Determined to make a change, three years ago Faloni launched his eponymous luxury menswear label specialising in brushed cotton and linen shirts and shorts, leather accessories and cashmere. When your list of past clients includes Napoleon and Lord Byron, you know you’re probably doing something right. Pineider, now one of Italy’s favourite stationery brands, was founded in Florence in 1774 by Francesco Pineider, who had a flair for experimentation – his early work featured advanced printing techniques, typeface design and complex embossing of emblems and monograms. Italy’s contemporary creative elite still turns to Pineider today for its paper, pens and leather goods, and this year the brand is undergoing a major makeover that merges its two and a half centuries of expertise with a more contemporary aesthetic. Alfredo Jaar does not describe himself as an artist, nor as a sculptor or filmmaker. Nonetheless, the Chilean has produced artworks, installations, films and photographs that focus on politics and human rights for over three decades. ‘I am an architect who makes art,’ he explains. ‘I studied architecture; I never received formal training in art. I need to understand before acting, which is how architects work. Context is everything.’ Jaar likes to say that his process is 99 per cent research and one per cent art, the majority of which takes place in his recently renovated studio in New York’s Chelsea. ‘This place is about understanding and researching. Completed this summer, Segerstedthuset has a distinctively modern form characteristic of its Copenhagen-based architects, 3xn. It consists of two U-shaped, overlapping volumes that abound with sharp angles and floor-to-ceiling glass, tempered with an abundance of horizontal lines and gently sloping roof elements that blend the building into the natural landscape. Comprising a low-slung concrete main building straddled by a striking white box, Casa Azimute was designed to frame the rolling hills and cloudless skies of Portugal’s Alentejo region, a stargazing hotspot. Its Belgian owners, Andy Didden and Danny Puype, have installed varnished cement floors, sleek showers and freestanding bath tubs, while in the main living and dining space, bright furniture adds pops of colour to the minimalist decor, echoing the local wildflowers in the arid landscape. THINKK STUDIO The Bangkok-based design studio with a Thai-meets-Scandi aesthetic Named in acknowledgment of its desire to approach projects in a unique and cerebral manner – literally, to ‘think’ differently – Decha Archjananun and Ploypan Theerachai, both graduates of King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology Ladkrabang, started Thinkk Studio in 2008. Its considered but contemporary, Thai-meets-Scandinavian aesthetic punctuates projects that range from desk accessories and lighting to hotel interiors.
