What do barrel, moon and compass all have in common? They are all types of jellyfish found in UK waters, and if you spot any on your next trip to the beach, scientists want to hear about it.
As part of its nationwide project Jellywatch, the Marine Conservation Society (MCS) is asking people in the UK and Ireland to report any jellyfish they see, either in the water or washed ashore.
“Jellyfish have a bit of an image problem, but they’re actually one of the most fascinating and important animals in our seas,” said Anna Bunney, a scientist at MCS who is involved with the project. For example, scientists say jellyfish are very sensitive to their surroundings, so tracking them can reveal changes in water temperature, ocean currents, salt levels…
