One of the additions to the World Heritage list is the Zarafshan-to-Karakum corridor, running 540 miles through the mountains, valleys and deserts of Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan. This was an important part of the Silk Road, a network of trading routes in Central Asia that people used for about 1,500 years to transport goods for buying and selling. From 130BC to AD1453, traders used the routes to take silk from Asia to Europe, as well as precious stones, tea and spices.
