Records and documents concerning the construction of a palace in Joseon, scattered throughout several places, have now been gathered in one place. The special exhibition ‘Timeless Marvels, The Construction of a Palace in Joseon’ opened on Dec. 6 at the National Palace Museum of Korea and provides insight into the overall process of palace construction from the Joseon Dynasty. A certain number of exhibitions have been held focusing on a single architectural building, such as the Jongmyo Shrine and Changdeokgung Palace, but this display marks the first approach made towards the architectural form of a palace itself. Related assets preserved in many institutions, including Cultural Heritage Administration, The Academy of Korean Studies, and Land & Housing Museum, are brought together and arranged following the general process of palace construction. The Seoul Metropolitan Government (SMG) has announced the winners of the design competitions for Bamseom Ecological Observation Deck (Mass Studies), Seoul Animation Center (SPACE Group, Idea Image Institute of Architects Co. Ltd, EUS+Architects), and Seoul Craft Museum (Haenglim Architecture & Engineering Co. Ltd, Song Hayub, Cheon Janghwan). All three projects will devise new features for the city of Seoul, since these plans emerge in the middle of Seoul’s period of city planning, which has actively progressed over recent years. The exhibition ‘Writing Play’ by artist Chang Sungeun was held from Nov. 1 – 30 at the Amado Art apace located in Hannam-dong. It displays artworks that were awarded by the Amado photography award, as part of an international photography contest to foster and discover talent among photographers of Asian nationality aged 40 and under, including that of Korea. As we live in an age in which the concept and the meaning behind photographs have changed beyond recognition with a paradigm shift in the production and consumption of photographs, the award intends to identify photographers who experiment with the possibilities of rapidly expanding media platforms and how this draws our attention to the unique way the photographer makes use of photos. Deep in the Green Park built in the corporate HQ of POSCO Energy, located in Cheongna International City, Incheon, stands an extraordinary structure. This is formed from a round shell structured roof, made all the more striking with its eccentric swirling geometric patterning that sits on top of multiple lines of curving pipes. The name of this structure, which is here materialised in a three-dimensional structure by using a two-dimensional arc without a vertical frame, is Solar Pine. It is a sculptural structure that generates its own solar power. We will here consider what prompted the creation of Solar Pine, and how it was realised. Moon Hoon’s architecture is, in a word, ‘amusing’. Characterised by a luminescent charm that pervades its surroundings, his architecture offers the feeling of a perpetual walk along a vibrant Mobius strip. What might the source of this joy be? They are not all buildings with a strong sense of concept, as in the Busan Times which presides over the neighbourhood like a night owl, or the Pino Familia which embodies the form of waves, whales and Pinocchio. The National Agency for Administrative City Construction (administrator, Lee Choongjae, NAACC) announced on Nov. 14 that the Sejong Museum Gardens by Junglim Architecture + Office OU had been selected as the Final winner in the National Museum Complex Master Plan of the Administrative City. After presenting a final plan following consultation with NAACC, the winner will be granted license to design the National Children Museum, the Central Storehouse, the Central Operation Center which will begin as of next year. Over the past few years, the Hanok market has shown a slight rate of growth and some degree of vigour, but now it seems to have lost momentum. A solution proposed for overcoming this situation, a development project for traditional Korean-style villages, has been implemented throughout the country under the support of central and local governments. The current French Embassy in Korea, with its distinctive concrete eaves pointed towards the sky, is the representative work of Kim Chungup, who was long considered the master of Korean architecture with Kim Swoo Geun. On Dec. 14, the French Embassy announced a rare plan to restore the official residence and office building and to construct two new buildings. In July 2015, the embassy opened the competition for the construction of the new office. With this announcement of demolition and redevelopment, the embassy was faced with a strong backlash from numerous Korean architects. The Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism requested the conservation of the building, and following a one-year-long consultation, a process of conservation was finally decided upon. In December, Eunpyeong Hanok Village was in the middle of construction. Two years ago, its 156 lots were ‘sold out’ in a surprise triumph, but so far it seems only about 30 houses have been realised. Along the streets, where there were almost no traces of passersby, only ad placards with texts like ‘Hanok construction consulting service’ or ‘Hanok construction specialist’ fluttered in the cold wind. In 2017, this ongoing development project for traditional Korean-style villages is underway across the country, but, almost as if the design had been predetermined, all of them exhibit a similar aspect. Collaborations between corporations and the art scene are no longer surprising — for example, Louis Vuitton inviting Takashi Murakami (2002) and Kusama Yayoi (2012) to take on the role of art director is now considered a ‘textbook’ move in art marketing.
