The beginning of the summer of 2021 was an interesting one for me in terms of sailing experiences. In addition to loving being able to sail with full crews again (after a very satisfying but sometimes lonely year of solo-sailing during the pandemic) I found myself taking a trip in Mr. Peabody’s “Wayback” machine with respect to the first couple of the boats I sailed. When buying a boat, consider how its ratios compare with those of similar boats in its category. DISPLACEMENT-LENGTH RATIO The displacement-length ratio (D/L) is a nondimensional expression of how heavy a boat is in relation to its waterline length. A D/L is calculated by dividing a boat’s displacement in long tons (2,240lb) by one one-hundredth of the waterline length (in feet) cubed. Since the displacement in long tons can be expressed as a volume (in cubic feet of seawater), and since length-cubed is also volumetric, the D/L formula is nondimensional—the units of the numerator and the denominator are the same: feet cubed. HYLAS 57 Despite its impressive LOA, the H57 has been deliberately configured by veteran designer Bill Dixon to serve as a bluewater cruiser with couples in mind. All sail controls lead aft to the cockpit to be within reach of the twin helms. Similarly, twin rudders ensure there’s an automatic backup in the event one of the two appendages should ever be damaged by, say, an unidentified floating object while on passage. The boat’s main, genoa and self-tacking jib all come with power-furling standard, which in combination with the H57’s electric sheet winches makes sail trim a snap. With new catamaran brands springing up like mushrooms, France’s Fountaine-Pajot is something of an oak tree in the market, with a story that goes back to its founding in 1976. It is also one of the largest cat builders out there, sending some 600 boats down the ways a year. The new Elba 45 replaced the 7-year-old Helia 44 and is intended to be the yard’s new bestseller. For that reason, it is no mold-breaking tearaway, but rather a safe, dependable, well-thought-out mainstay model. The question new sailors often ask when they first experience a sailboat heeling is, “What stops it from going all the way over?” to which the usual answer is something like: “That big lump of lead underneath us.” However, while stability lies at the very root of sailboat design, ballast is only one of the many factors that influence it. In practice, a boat’s stability is contingent on the relationship between two key factors. One is the center of gravity (CG), through which gravity exerts a downward force equal to the weight of the boat, rig and contents. I’ve often written in the boat reviews I’ve done over the years that pretty much any boat sails well in 15 knots of breeze (typically as a word of explanation as to why sail trials done in drifting conditions are as relevant as those done in a small gale). However, it occurred to me that there is an exception to this rule of thumb, and that is aboard a performance multihull like the Corsair 880 trimaran. The reason for this is the basic nature of tris. Groupe Beneteau, builder of Lagoon Catamarans, debuted its new multihull line called Excess at the Dusseldorf boat show in Germany in 2018. They held a press conference where I may have been a bit of a pain as I asked what I thought were appropriate questions about the target market as well as the differentiation of these models from Lagoon multihulls. In fact, the first two XCS models launched were based on previous Lagoon designs. The Excess (or XCS) 12 and 15 translate loosely to the Lagoon 40 and 50 respectively, but were being touted as sporty versions of their cousins. I had my doubts—until I sailed them. The new Beneteau Oceanis Yacht 54 shares a lot of DNA with the company’s First Yacht 53, introduced last year and reviewed by SAIL in its May 2020 issue. The Oceanis Yacht 54, however, is both a good deal more luxurious and carries a slightly different rig for sailors who lean more toward cruising and entertaining than racing. With heel angle increasing from left to right and the righting arm plotted vertically, the GZ curve will tell you several things about a boat’s stability. The angle of the upward leg of the curve indicates the initial stiffness of the boat. A shallow angle would indicate, for example, that the boat is initially tender; a steep angle points to a boat that has high initial stability. The top of the curve marks the maximum righting arm; after this point is passed the boat will become progressively less stable as GZ decreases.
