Adding the mince to the pan of onions and garlic, I was preparing a Shepherd’s pie.
With three kids to feed – Beth, 21, Dillan, 17, and Lucas, nine – as well as my husband Marc, 45, this meal was a family favourite.
And having welcomed the newest member of the family, Thomas, now one, on 2 August 2022, it was a quick and easy meal, too.
Chatting away to Beth as I browned the meat, she had Thomas, then three months, in her arms.
Only as Beth and I nattered away, I looked over at the pair and froze.
Thomas’ left eye looked strange – like a glass, cat eye.
‘Bring him here, his eye’s gone funny,’ I said.
Only when Beth moved closer to me, I couldn’t see…
