Can’t Cancel Pride — the annual benefit from Procter & Gamble and iHeartRadio that’s raised millions for LGBTQ+ organizations — began with a conversation about the Muppets. Brent Miller, the global LGBTQ equality leader for P&G and a gay man himself, was sitting in his New York City living room in 2020, having a virtual “water cooler” chat with colleagues. The conversation turned to LGBTQ+ people and how especially vulnerable they were in the pandemic. Nonprofits were losing funding. Young people were sheltering in place, separated from in-person queer networks, and oftentimes trapped with unsupportive family members. With events canceled across the world, the future of Pride itself — the annual celebration that brings LGBTQ+ people together in a dazzling month of visibility — seemed uncertain. How to move forward?…

Kane C. Andrade uses art to effect change. The San Francisco-based photographer and creative producer is also a military veteran and transgender man, and his work centers and uplifts other members of his community. “I like to shoot what I know,” Andrade attests. “As a Latino trans man, I wanted to share an idea of my experience and my journey vicariously through the casting of this shoot. It’s important to me to highlight my community and in turn specifically to highlight trans men of color.” In this project for Out, Andrade took portraits of fellow Bay Area residents Gray Anderson, Jaime Serra dos Santos, and Xavier-Dominic Williams on an iPhone 14 Pro Max as a celebration of intersectional lives. In her historic acceptance speech, Petras thanked her mother for believing her when, as a youth, she first declared she was a girl. It was an impromptu moment. The “Heart to Break” singer had written up a more traditional speech full of names and acknowledgements, but she scrapped it minutes before her category was announced.…

LET’S HAVE A BABY TOGETHER. It’ll only set you back $250,000. To become a gay dad with a biological child, you’ll first need some eggs (human ones). You can buy some from an egg bank or try to find a donor who will cycle just for you. If doing the latter, it’s good to have contracts, so you’ll need a lawyer too. Then you need to get your eggs to a fertility clinic. If you have a donor, you’ll be paying for their travel and appointments. If you’ve got the eggs, a freezer truck transportation service will do. Not just a parade and a party, Sydney Mardi Gras evolved from Australia’s own version of Stonewall in 1978, when police violently broke up the city’s small public Pride celebration. Those who took part in that march and suffered at the hands of police are revered as “78ers” and hold a place of honor in the Australian LGBTQ+ community. When Sydney WorldPride convened this year under the banner “Gather, Dream, Amplify,” organizers wanted to extend that celebration of history to center Indigenous First Nations as well. After all, Australia’s Aboriginal people have lived here for at least 65,000 years, making theirs the oldest continuing culture in the world. In Berlin, I do not know which friends identify as queer and which do not. I love not knowing. Straight men dabble, show up at techno parties in jockstraps, harnesses, and rubber — and go for women. My grip on my own sexual identity has dissolved. This started long before moving here; my first book was, among other things, about how I never settled on a label. But Berlin has cemented this: I am label-less. In the city’s party scene, the boundaries between queer and straight collapse. In her 2022 Netflix special, Good Fortune, Fortune Feimster recounts the story of a homophobe who sent her a vile message on social media. In the message, “Gary” asked, “How long have you and your wife been mentally ill taco-licking lesbians who should be put in Alcatraz?” In response, the stand-up comic and actor declared, “Gary just recognized my marriage. He said, ‘your wife,’ and that is called progress.” True to her gentle style of modeling queer visibility by being her authentic self, Feimster doesn’t tear down the homophobe. She turns his hate on its head to highlight that his acknowledgment of her nuptials to a woman is something that wouldn’t have occurred at the start of her career. Makeup on men has been a touchy subject for centuries. Yet in the past, noblemen and other aristocrats not only wore makeup; they layered on brightly colored blush and heavy powder. That’s not even mentioning their shoes, which were stacked as high as their hair — both with ribbons and bows. We’re talking straight, burly men with swords, mind you. So what’s the deal? In the last decade, makeup has come a long way in design, intention, and engineering. This means the industry can reach a wide variety of male consumers that use makeup — however they choose to apply it.
