The Washington Post is currently testing its progressive web app mobile experience. “Any technology that allows us to offer a superior experience to our readers is a priority,” explains chief product and technology officer Shailesh Prakash. “Readers want instant load times, and the combination of Google’s AMP [Accelerated Mobile Pages] and progressive web app technologies allows us to offer a game-changing experience for the mobile web.”
By definition PWAs are progressive, responsive, connectivity-independent, app-like, fresh, safe, discoverable, re-engageable, installable and linkable. Leveraging PWA technologies is hugely beneficial to user experience because no time is wasted when getting content to readers. Further, PWAs offer offline-friendly reading capabilities, and the app shell model allows for native-feeling interactions (for example, the ability to swipe right to see the next article).
