Before you can use it in Safari, open the Apple ID pane and enable it in the iCloud section there. Note, though, that this isn’t a full VPN service. When you want to load a webpage, Safari’s request is encrypted and passes into the Private Relay service in iCloud. There it’s sent through two separate relays; the first anonymizes your IP address to hide it from the website you’re connecting to. Bright ideas can can come in a flash, and by the time you’ve fumbled for an app to record them they’ve vanished. Capture your eureka moment in a Quick Note. Use the Fn+Q key combination, or set yourself a hot corner using the Screen Saver tab of the Desktop & Screen Saver pane to activate it. AUTOMATION MAKES TASKS easier and less error–prone. Shortcuts has been a huge success on iPadOS and iOS, and has now come to macOS, eventually to replace Automator. However, documentation is limited and it has some rough edges. Here’s how to smooth them. 1 CUSTOM SHORTCUT ICONS Make your shortcuts icons distinct in color and mini–icon. However, there are many files and folders that I keep on my home page that contain privileged financial and personal information that I access often, but want to keep encrypted when not being used. WHEN YOU’RE BOMBARDED by notifications, it’s easy to disable most or ignore them, and miss what’s most important in the process. The Notifications & Focus pane introduces two properties to help you tell which merit most urgent attention — critical and time–sensitive alerts. Alerts are those notifications which appear in the upper–right corner of the display, and require dismissing with a click. Although you can opt for any app you want to post notifications as an alert rather than a banner which goes away of its own accord;Al critical and time–sensitive alerts are different. Few apps have privileged access to these high alerts: Calendar, Home, Messages, Reminders, Screen Time, and Wallet. Before you dispose of any Mac, it’s vital to remove from it all trace of personal data, which isn’t too difficult on most Intel Macs just by formatting the internal storage. But this becomes more complex if the Mac has a T2 chip or is an Apple silicon model. The new command to Erase All Content and Settings, available in the System Preferences menu, is an excellent and reliable way to do that, as it destroys all the encryption keys stored on that Mac, making access to old data impossible. Whether you want to use a password manager, set up a new Mac without Keychain in iCloud, or just want a copy for reference, exporting your passwords from Safari or the Passwords pane is a great solution. IN ADDITION TO the regular iCloud Drive folder in the sidebar of Finder windows and elsewhere, Monterey adds a new folder for folders and files that are shared through iCloud. When your notebook is close to a desktop Mac with its own larger display, you can now use the display of that nearby Mac to extend that on your notebook, provided that they both fully support AirPlay. Both need to be signed into the same Apple ID, and to be able to connect with one another over Wi–Fi or through a USB cable, with Bluetooth turned on.
