WORKING IT OUT FABRIC REQUIREMENTS Last issue we looked at quilt block maths, this issue we are going to multiply up the blocks and then put together a shopping list for the quilt blocks. PLANNING THE QUILT 1 Taking the Sawtooth Star block from last issue, we worked on a 12in finished block, which needed the following pieces (Fig 1): ■ Centre square: one (1) 6½in square. ■ Outer squares: four (4) 3½in squares. ■ HSTs: four (4) 4in squares in each of two fabrics. 2 If we design our quilt as a grid structure of four blocks wide by five blocks high, we would have a 48in by 60in quilt, a lovely lap size.
