Of all the photographs that appeared in Bazaar, perhaps the most famous is Richard Avedon’s Dovima with elephants. Taken at Cirque d’Hiver in Paris and published in the September 1955 issue, the image would become the template for high fashion in the 1950s, and Dorothy Virginia Margaret Juba, who rechristened herself Dovima, would help define the notion of beauty for an era. By the 1970s, though, Dovima’s star had faded, and she wound up working as a hostess at Two Guys pizzeria in Fort Lauderdale, a poster of Dovima with elephants on display in the back room. Stephanie Seymour was only 14 when she started modeling in her native San Diego. But just two years later she was walking the runways in Europe and had become a muse to the Tunisian couturier Azzedine Alaïa. In March 2014, Stephanie, now married to art collector Peter Brant and a mother of four, did her first-ever editorial with her sons Peter Jr. and Harry for Bazaar. Cindy Crawford was one of the original supermodels—that handful of young women who booked nearly every cover, editorial, and major campaign in the late 1980s and early ’90s. “We worked almost every day, and the days we weren’t working we were on a plane,” Cindy remembers. “If I could go back, I’d try to drink it all in more.” She says the apex of that period was her now famous strut down the Versace catwalk in 1991, when she walked arm in arm with Naomi Campbell, Linda Evangelista, and Christy Turlington to George Michael’s hit “Freedom ’90.” (They’d all appeared in the song’s video.) “That was the moment,” she recalls. “It felt like the stars were in alignment.”…

I went on my first date with a woman in the ’90s, after I got divorced from my husband. MANY PEOPLE HAVE pushed olive oil aside in recent years in favor of coconut oil, which has garnered headlines for its ability to improve everything from your cholesterol profile to weight loss. But a new study may have you extending an olive branch, so to speak, to extra virgin olive oil. When researchers added a compound found only in certain types of olive oil—an antioxidant called oleocanthal—to cancer cells in the lab, something amazing happened: It wiped out the cancer cells in less than an hour. Even better, the oleocanthal didn’t harm the healthy cells. “That was definitely an oMG moment,” says study co-author Paul Breslin, a professor of nutritional sciences at Rutgers University. The findings showed that oleocanthal proves lethal to cancer cells because it can penetrate their lysosomes…

Fashion photographers adore working with Linda Evangelista in part because she is the industry’s ultimate changeling. At one point she dyed her hair 17 times in five years. If models are real-life mannequins, then Christy Turlington could be classified as an ideal prototype. Or so says the Metropolitan Museum of Art, which, in 1993, used Christy’s bone structure as the basis for the mannequins at the Costume Institute. Her expressive eyes and high cheekbones have been the gold standard now for more than 25 years. But Christy has never let fashion define her. In 1994, at the peak of her career, she enrolled at New York University and went on to study at Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health. “I’m a silent actress,” Carmen Dell’Orefice says of her heyday in magazines. Carmen, perhaps the world’s most glamorous octogenarian, has been working since she was a teenager in the 1940s. The poster child for the youthquake movement coming out of London in the 1960s, Jean Shrimpton was to modeling what the Rolling Stones were to music. Before her, models had been statuesque, poised, and perfectly coiffed. But Jean was diminutive and gangly, her hair fringed and wild, and she was not afraid to wear the scandalous garment of the time: the miniskirt. Richard Avedon would go on to make some of the most memorable images to appear in Bazaar in the ’60s with her. Japanese-American artist Isamu Noguchi is best remembered as one of the 20th century’s great sculptors, but he wore many hats: creating sets for choreographer Martha Graham; designing furniture (including the mass-market glass coffee table that has become synonymous with his name); and working as a landscape architect, planning the gardens and public beautification projects to which he devoted much of his life. Noguchi, who died in 1988, was fascinated by how people and the natural world interact with man-made objects.
