Chetty, a member of the Shallcross community policing forum, was stabbed to death during a house robbery in August. The suspects were charged with murder and robbery with aggravating circumstances. The first accused, Sibusiso Nzama, a father of two, had a pending case pertaining to robbery. While in the Durban High Court for this matter, he was arrested for his alleged involvement in the Shallcross robberies and killing. Nzama, 36, of St Wendolins in Mariannhill, is an engineer. In August, the POST reported the police and the Private Security Industry Regulatory Authority (Psira) launched an investigation, into KZN VIP Security and three other security companies for their alleged role in the violence in Phoenix. It was alleged the companies were lending out firearms to civilians during the unrest. At the time, Minister of Police Bheki Cele, said a team of investigators had seized 152 firearms from the security companies. He said the seizure of firearms was within the ambit of the law. According to a study conducted by the Human Sciences Research Council, funded by the eThekwini Municipality’s Safer Cities Unit in February 2016, there were about 4 000 homeless people, with 1 959 persons living on the street and 1 974 persons living in shelters. That would be the last time they saw her. Mulayen, 22, a waitress, from Brackenham, in Richards Bay, was found dead in a veld on Thursday night. The price of fuel has increased due to the price of crude oil. In South Africa, motorists are paying just over R18 a litre for petrol and diesel after both increased in price last Wednesday. Petrol rose by R1.21 per litre and diesel by R1.48 per litre. This week, the Transvaal Agricultural Union of South Africa (TLU SA) warned that higher prices for fuel and fertiliser were making it more expensive to farm, and these costs would have to be recovered from consumers. Benny van Zyl, the general manager at TLU SA, said a recent report by Grain SA showed that fertiliser prices were at record high levels. Sanjay Juggernath, 34, was shot and killed on December 22, 2018, at the corner of Ganesh and Flower roads in Clairwood. Bilal Shaik, 43, Alistair Govender, 36, Brandon Armugan, 30, and Leon Veerasamy, 30, were arrested and charged with murder. According to the post-mortem report, Juggernath died of multiple gunshot wounds. He was shot 12 times. At the start of the trial earlier this year in the Durban Regional Court, the State, represented by prosecutor Sandiso Ngonyama, alleged the killing was premeditated. Naidoo, a security adviser at Hulamin, was shot while leaving his home in Indus Road on the morning of August 30, 2019. He was on his way to drop off his three-year-old granddaughter at crèche. In order to save his grandchild, Naidoo pushed her into the legroom of the front passenger seat and served as her shield. He died at the scene. Sanele Cele, 39, of Durban North, and Jabulani Jerome Ndlela, 42, of Inanda, were subsequently arrested last year and charged with murder and attempted murder. POWER depends on voluntary obedience – citizens must obey laws, and the officers of state must enforce them. To change society when authorities won’t listen, one must disobey, collectively and publicly, appealing to the conscience of the rest of society to restore justice. Civil disobedience doesn’t mean peaceful (though it can be). It refers to resistance to the civil state, the state as coextensive with society – the point of negotiations between elites from the political community.
