Painterly prints are having their moment, appearing across fashion, homewares, graphics and branding concepts. From traditional marbelling techniques that echo a handcrafted approach, to new methods of pattern generation, designers are increasingly experimenting with alternative substrates, production methods and colour combinations in order to create novel, spontaneous and uncontrolled patterning. Fashion and textile designer Jillian Boustred, a recent graduate from the University of Technology in Sydney, pushes marbled print into a more painterly direction in her Undercurrents fashion collection. Her sportswear-inspired garments act as the canvas for her artwork, which feature alchemic prints of dripping paints and running inks. In an era of online information saturation, web-based commercial clients are constantly on the lookout for innovations in digital design to make their products stand out from the crowd. In the last five years, London-based agency Toaster has become one of the leading providers of design solutions for some of the world’s biggest internet brands. For its latest issue, the magazine enlisted the help of Stockholm-based studio Snask. “The goal was to capture creatives and inspire them, but also to show them what’s possible with print,” explains Snask’s co-founder and creative director Fredrik Öst. “In this issue, Printing Friends took a culinary trip around the world and ate mashed potato typography, a coconut flavoured ‘space burger’ and a knitted hot dog among other delicacies,” he adds. Work out what you are trying to achieve from your self-promotional work. Some things might seem funny, or guaranteed to blow up the Twittersphere, but what does the work say about your creative thinking? Karin Langeveld from Trapped in Suburbia sums it up with this advice: “Find the essence to your story. Stick to this and never let it out of sight. Choose the medium that embodies this essence. Seek to connect with your users on an emotional level by involving them in your design. For me, being an art director is like the letter T: you’ve broad knowledge across a number of things on your top bar, and have a particular strength in one area. Mine is design. Others might have photography, illustration. Designing in an ad environment is tough because of the deadlines – it’s fast, fast, fast. As an art director when you work with designers, illustrators and so on they have time to concentrate solely on one thing. When you’re an AD and you have to execute design as well, you don’t have the luxury of time as you have a couple of other plates spinning, plus the meetings and never-ending emails. We created a whole icon suite, not currently in use, based on the logo’s formula of sharpness and roundedness. It’s a classic Moving Brands approach – creating a minimal framework to be able to expand deeply across a system. The client was desperate for a 3D version of the logo for the app. Even though it wasn’t part of the brand language, they insisted that Indians like their app logos shiny. We rendered a 3D version, but ultimately convinced them to go 2D. There were a number of different initial creative routes. One of them used a picture of a house, with the ‘ing’ built into it. The client really liked it, but it didn’t have the same ability to scale globally with the business.…

My process is often quite brief. Sometimes I’m approached with a concept completely developed, and I just have to make the art director’s vision happen. These jobs are pretty easy to execute but not the most challenging. Research and discovery is actually my favourite part of what I do, so it’s nice when a brief is loose and I’m allowed to do this. A lot of my research takes place online. Sometimes, if time is on my side, I may go to a library. For a Herman Miller poster I created, I found a library that stocked all the archived Architectural Review magazines from the 1960s and 70s. 1 POWER YOUR PROJECT You need to be aware of silly things, such as making sure that there is 24-hour power. Harrods, for example, powers down. After the store closes, the lights actually go off during the night, so making sure we had a constant power feed was crucial. 2 STAY SENSITIVE TO YOUR AUDIENCE We realised that people will always try and get into the window and touch the egg, so we had security to make sure nobody would go near the projectors. Marketing isn’t just a byword for showing off and hoping it works. Rather, it’s a numbers game. Savvy marketers habitually monitor the results their work has generated and use that data to inform their future projects and drives. Adding Google Analytics to your portfolio site is an easy way to start monitoring your campaign’s potency. The process works by first adding some code to your site and setting up an Analytics account. It’s not as difficult as it sounds and Google provides lots of help. Fed up with filament bulb overkill and the lack of energy-efficient lighting options on the market, Massimo Buster Minale and the team at Buster + Punch decided to make their own. Made from patented crystal resin with a metallic-tinted glass cover, the light pipe in the centre of the bulb allows it to showcase both ambient and focused, spot-light effects, using only 3 Watts of energy. “There were a hundred challenges during the making,” explains Minale. “We quickly realised there was a reason why there were no designer LED bulbs on the market. This one, for his friend Roxy Brennan, left Gabriel with a lot of freedom: “The only stipulations were to have an area in which tour dates could be added and edited,” he says. It’s important to say that a self-promotional project, however brilliant, is the beginning rather than the end of the process. Dazzling a potential employer with your creative genius is all well and good, but you can quickly undo that good work if you don’t then make the most of any opportunity it opens up. 1 Brand disconnect Previously, Housing had a logo and a colour, but no brand system. They have a world-class product, but the brand was completely disconnected from the quality of the product. Once they understood the benefits of our workshopping phase, the clients were completely into it. 2 Digging for identity It was easy to find interesting nuggets about the brand. For example, they always ask ‘what next?’. They had just cracked the most complicated challenge in real estate, and that was the first thing they asked. RESEARCH PERIOD I did a lot of research into the art deco period, looking at shapes, patterns and icons from that era. I was inspired by the surreal designs of Elsa Schiaparelli and the artwork of A.M. Cassandre as well as Erté. The shape that underpins the master illustration is from a 1930s dresser I found on an auction site. FIRST SKETC H I did a rough sketch and scanned and collaged in a few more elements.
